Our Story

Time and again, our careers led us to the same conclusion: marketing teams rarely struggle because they lack talent. More often, they lack the clarity, alignment, and support they need to succeed.

Why We Built It

Bill Backus

Co-Founder + Fractional Chief Brand + Marketing Officer

I've spent my career asking questions. Why do some teams move with confidence while others, equally talented, stay stuck reacting? Why do great ideas lose momentum? And why do organizations so often rush toward execution before agreeing on where they're going?

That curiosity has shaped how I approach brand and marketing strategy. I love getting upstream of the work, simplifying complexity, challenging assumptions, and helping leaders find a direction their teams can actually rally behind. But I'm equally passionate about what happens once that direction becomes clear. For me, strategy and creativity have always been two sides of the same conversation.

Over the years, I've had the opportunity to bring that thinking to brands and organizations including DreamWorks, Payless ShoeSource, Swift Transportation, SRP, Niagara Bottling, Childhelp, Commonwealth Insurance, CRC, HiRO, and Dose of Colors. Different industries and different challenges, but the lesson has remained remarkably consistent: great creative becomes much more powerful when it begins with clarity.

Today, I lead strategic discovery and brand direction at Nopal Social Lab, working directly with marketing leaders to understand the challenges they're facing, uncover what's happening beneath the surface, and establish a clearer path forward. I also lead creative direction, collaborating with clients and our Social Lab Partners to turn strategy into compelling campaign ideas, messaging, and brand experiences that connect with audiences and deliver meaningful results. I enjoy moving between the big-picture thinking and the creative details, making sure the work stays true to the direction we established together.

That belief in getting upstream of the work became the foundation for The Clarity Method™ and why we built Nopal Social Lab. I'm still asking questions, still challenging assumptions, and still chasing the moment when complexity finally clicks into something everyone can see. And when that clarity sparks an idea worth bringing to life, that's when the work gets really interesting.

Christina Backus

Co-Founder + Senior Communications Strategist

I've always loved the space where words and visuals come together. A great idea can fall flat with the wrong message, and even the best writing can lose its impact when the design doesn't support it. I love being able to move between both worlds, finding clarity in the big idea and understanding how every piece contributes to bringing it to life.

I spent 15 years at PetSmart, where I partnered with executive leaders through organizational change, helping translate strategy into communications that connected with people across the business. From executive presentations and company-wide town halls to creative campaigns and corporate storytelling, I learned how important it is for people to understand not just the direction, but their role in making it happen.

That experience, paired with my work in writing, design, and creative direction for organizations including Payless ShoeSource, Commonwealth Casualty, and The Singletons, shaped the kind of partner I am today. I can write with a designer's eye, design with a writer's perspective, and creative direct with an understanding of what it takes to make the whole thing work.

At Nopal Social Lab, I help turn strategic direction into something people can understand, connect with, and act on. That might mean shaping a brand narrative, developing messaging, guiding creative concepts, or collaborating with our Social Lab Partners to bring an idea to life. I bring both a creative perspective and an understanding of how organizations actually work, making sure the big idea holds together from the leadership conversation to the final execution.

What I love most is collaborating with people who care about the details as much as the bigger picture. The kind of people who will challenge an idea, laugh when something isn't working, and keep pushing until it finally clicks. Because for me, the best part of this work has always been the people you get to create it with.
